History
West Coast Rap took shape in California in the 1980s, with Los Angeles especially important to its early identity. N.W.A.’s rise from Compton helped push the sound beyond a local scene, and Apple Music’s artist notes place the group’s formation in 1986 and describe Straight Outta Compton as the record that changed the game for the coast. By the early 1990s, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic helped define a fuller West Coast palette: funk-rooted grooves, dense low end, and a smoother but still tense sense of momentum that became closely associated with G-funk and the region’s rap mainstream.
