Chillwave
A blog-born microgenre with a short but visible peak, chillwave is best understood through its misty production, nostalgic mood, and the early recordings that helped name it. The term stuck even as many of the artists moved on, leaving a small but durable trail in indie-electronic history.

History
The label “chillwave” took hold in 2009, when music blogs began using it to group together bedroom-made pop that sounded woozy, tropical, and half-remembered. Pitchfork’s later account places the genre’s early momentum in 2009 and points to Washed Out, Neon Indian, and Toro y Moi as the most visible names in the first wave, with “Feel It All Around,” “Deadbeat Summer,” and “Blessa” serving as emblematic early recordings. The style grew out of a blog-era ecosystem where Myspace, Bandcamp, and rapid-file-sharing made it easy for bedroom producers to circulate tracks with a unified mood but no single rulebook. Retrospectives and style guides describe it as a short-lived microgenre with roots in dream pop, synth-pop, ambient pop, and related indie-electronic scenes; some artists embraced the tag, while others treated it as a convenient shorthand rather than a fixed identity.
