Cocteau Twins are widely treated as a defining early touchstone, while A.R. Kane helped popularize the word itself; both acts pushed voice, guitar effects, and studio haze toward something suspended and dreamlike. The style’s roots also reach backward to the Beach Boys, the Byrds, and the Velvet Underground, whose harmony writing and attention to tone and texture gave later dream-pop artists a useful blueprint.
