History
Delta blues took shape in the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century, within a wider Black Southern musical world that included work songs, spirituals, and older vernacular styles. By the 1920s and 1930s, artists such as Charley Patton, Son House, and Robert Johnson had helped define the music on record and in performance, and later writers and archivists helped preserve and name the style more explicitly. The Library of Congress and related documentation projects also helped cement its place in the historical record, especially through field recordings and scholarship focused on blues from the Delta region.
