History

Peking Opera took shape in Beijing after 1790, when four major Anhui opera troupes arrived in the capital and absorbed material from older regional traditions such as Kunqu, Yiyang, Hanju, and Luantan. Chinese cultural sources place its formal development in the decades that followed, as a shared theatrical language emerged around Beijing dialect, stylized singing, and a compact ensemble sound. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, the form had become one of China’s most visible stage traditions, and major performers helped carry it far beyond Beijing. UNESCO notes that the art remains centered in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, is transmitted through master-student training, and continues to be practiced widely as part of China’s cultural heritage.
