History
The word pagode long predates the genre, but as a musical label it took shape in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s and early 1980s around informal samba gatherings and backyard rodas. Sources describe those scenes as especially tied to Cacique de Ramos and other suburban samba meetups, where a younger generation of players helped renew samba with a more intimate percussion set and a looser, conversational feel. Beth Carvalho played an important role in bringing that sound to wider audiences by recording songs associated with the new wave of samba players. Over time, pagode broadened into several commercial and regional branches, including more romantic pop-facing styles, but its core identity still points back to samba-rooted community music rather than a separate tradition. That older, neighborhood-level energy is still the genre’s most vivid thread: a table, a chorus, hand drums, and the feeling that the song belongs to everyone in the room.
