History
The roots of musical theatre stretch back through operetta, comic opera, music hall, and other stage traditions that already mixed music with drama. Modern Western musical theatre took shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Broadway and London stages began favoring shows that tied songs more closely to story and character, rather than treating music as a decorative extra. By the 20th century, the form had widened fast: American composers and writers folded in jazz, ragtime, pop, and later rock, while London helped popularize large-scale productions that travelled widely. The genre’s recorded life is just as important as its stage life; cast albums became the way many listeners first met a show, and recordings such as Hamilton later turned musical theatre into a streaming-era phenomenon.
