Dubstep

A South London bass music style that grew out of UK garage and pirate-radio culture, dubstep made space feel huge: the drums snap, the sub rattles, and the silence between hits matters as much as the hits themselves.

History

Dubstep emerged in South London in the early 2000s, taking shape around the Forward>> club night and related pirate-radio activity on Rinse FM. Sources also place the term itself in circulation around 2002, with the style drawing from dub, reggae, UK garage, drum’n’bass, techno, and jungle. One of the early anchor points for the sound was Burial’s South London Boroughs EP, released in 2005, while Burial’s later albums and singles helped carry the genre well beyond its local beginnings. By the late 2000s, dubstep had become a broader international label, though its meaning stretched and shifted as it traveled.
