History
Crunk took shape in Atlanta, Georgia, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, growing out of the city’s club circuit and Southern rap momentum. Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz helped push it into the mainstream, and recordings like the 2002 album Kings of Crunk and the hit “Get Low” became touchstones for the style. By the early 2000s, crunk had become closely associated with rowdy party rap: call-and-response vocals, heavy bass, and a brash, communal energy that made it easy to chant along to and hard to ignore.
