History
Chanukah itself traces back to the Maccabean revolt and the rededication of the Temple, and the holiday’s core story is preserved in later Jewish sources rather than the Hebrew Bible. The music associated with it grew out of older Jewish liturgical and folk song traditions, but for much of Jewish history Hanukkah remained a relatively minor holiday musically; the familiar modern repertoire expanded in the 20th century and then spread widely through recordings, community singing, and viral videos.
