History
The roots of Cajun fiddle music reach back to the Acadian migration after the Great Expulsion of 1755, when French-speaking exiles from Atlantic Canada settled in Louisiana and carried older violin-based dance music with them. In Louisiana, those tunes absorbed local influences from Anglo-American, African, Native American, Spanish, and other regional traditions, while the fiddle remained central even after the accordion later became a defining lead instrument in Cajun music more broadly. By the twentieth century, recorded Cajun music helped preserve and circulate these tunes beyond local dance settings, and the postwar revival brought renewed attention to older styles. Dewey Balfa became a major figure in that revival, and Smithsonian Folkways describes him as a musician responsible for reinvigorating Cajun music in the 1960s; the label’s recordings and lessons also show how fiddle-centered repertory remained a living teaching tradition rather than a museum piece.
