History

Asian Underground took shape in the UK in the 1990s, especially around London’s South Asian club culture and diaspora networks. Scholarship and contemporary reporting describe it as a British Asian dance-music scene that grew out of rave, club, and anti-racist spaces, and later came to be debated as a label because it was broad, sometimes imprecise, and tied to questions of identity and visibility. (discovery.ucl.ac.uk) Talvin Singh’s Anokha nights are repeatedly cited as central to the scene, and official artist pages for Singh, Nitin Sawhney, and State of Bengal place their work within this bridge between South Asian musical language and electronic production.
